Art & Design
Art and Design
We recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences. Art is the ability to allow all to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, pattern and different materials and processes.
We aim to empower children to celebrate their individuality whilst exploring ideas and take inspiration through the work of artists and designers from different times and cultures. We link our units closely to the thread of ‘Culture and Diversity’ ensuring that children have the opportunity to understand and express the meaning of art through different artists and periods of time in History.
Children will study names of artists throughout History, closely linked to other topics from their year groups, for example, Piet Mondrian’s linking to geometry in Year 2 or Henri Rousseau linking to rainforests in Year 4.
Children will also be provided with meaningful opportunities to express their creativity, acquire new skills as well as developing existing ones. We want all children to master skills in drawing, printing, painting and sculpture and have carefully mapped out a progressive curriculum to enable mastery. For example, learning to colour mix in Nursery; to exploring colour through brushstroke in year 2; developing their use of accurate colour language in Year 4 which finally leads to mastering choosing the right colour and tone for purpose in year 6. Children are taught how to accurately evaluate and analyse their work, and the work of others to learn from, as well as make suggestions for improvements.
